Lavonte David proves he’s elite LB in 2013

The Buccaneers had a tough season, really tough. After beginning the 2013 campaign 0-8, they were able to play the final half of the season even at 4-4 in large part to their defense, led by linebacker Lavonte David.

David is the recipient of the cover32 season game ball. He is by far the most deserving Buccaneer when the game ball nominations were handed out by the editors at cover32.

David shows up every week, does his job and does it very well. David led he 21st ranked Buccaneers scoring defense with 144 tackles, 6 sacks and 6 turnovers created. He gained some negative attention in Week 1 when his unsportsmanlike conduct penalty in the waning moments of the game allowed the Jets to kick a game winning field goal, but that didn’t phase David.

Schiano loved and trusted David, a University of Nebraska product. However that pales in comparison to the praise new head coach Lovie Smith has spoken about him. David’s new head coach, a defensive guy, believes that David is on his way to becoming a Derrick Brooks like linebacker. Huge praise from a man who coached Brooks as his position coach at one time.

David and the rest of his defensive teammates may have to get used to a new scheme next season, though as Smith told the media, he will build it around David.
