Jay Cutler has “automatic conversion” clause in contract

According to multiple reports, Jay Cutler’s seven-year extension has an “automatic conversion” clause that allows the club to create salary-cap space as needed going forward.

Cutler’s deal is worth $126.7 million with $54 million guaranteed. His base salary next season is $22.5 but the team can transfer a portion of that base into a signing bonus that would be prorated over life to clear cap space for that particular season.
