What’s in store for the San Diego Chargers?

While it was another bitter postseason for the Kansas City Chiefs, the surprise team of the postseason was the San Diego Chargers. After barely sneaking into the playoffs as the final wild card team, San Diego pulled off a first round road victory against the Cincinnati Bengals. The Chargers then traveled to Denver last weekend and fell just short of upsetting the Broncos.

With the Chargers season now over, we brought in cover32 San Diego managing editor Alex Cusick to answer a few questions about the team’s offseason.

1. What’s the No. 1 issue the Chargers must address in the offseason?

Get better at cornerback. This team’s secondary is the clear weakness. San Diego finished 29th against the pass and this is mainly due to poor cornerback play. Derek Cox received a big deal this offseason as a free agent and hasn’t lived up to the hype. This team needs to find a shutdown corner.

2. Who’s a player to watch next year who’s under the radar?

Manti Te’o. Everyone knows Te’o for his girlfriend hoax controversy, but later on in the year, the inside linebacker came on strong. He appeared to finally have adjusted to the speed of the NFL game.

3. Who’s a player who most certainly won’t be in a Chargers uniform next year?

I do not see how the Chargers can keep Derek Cox. He makes entirely too much money for his level of production on the field. I expect this team to draft at least two corners and try to sign a veteran in free agency.

Jamaal Charles is going to have a big role in the Pro Bowl. Find out what it is here.
