Raider mailbag: Draft strategy… QB? WR? Trade? What to do?!?!

Oakland Raiders mailbag is upon us once again. Not surprisingly, the questions are surrounding the typical off season topics, the NFL Draft and free agency, but this time they are a little more specific.

Personally, I think there is a very high probability of the Raiders WANTING to trade back. Whether or not they will be able to is another question and one that is not entirely in the control of the Raiders. I do not know there is much talent in the top five of the draft that is such a blue chip prospect that the Raiders simply cannot pass it up. If there is a good enough offer on the table, they will likely trade back and take the extra picks given how much help this roster needs.

General manager Reggie McKenzie is a firm believer in the “best player available” method of drafting. This is why he took DJ Hayden in the first round last season despite bigger needs on the defensive line and the availability of some good defensive tackles.

Right now, and it is still early with lots of information yet to be revealed, but I like Sammy Watkins as much as anyone else at the number five pick for the Raiders. As for Boyd, anytime I hear this much about a team being interested in a player THIS far away from the draft, it screams “smoke screen” to me. I’m not sure if there is much there or not.

I actually think there is a fairly big chance they do sign Freeman. He is young and has a lot of talent. His best season in the NFL was when current Raiders offensive coordinator Greg Olson was his quarterbacks coach and he will come very very cheap. Given those factors, he is not too bad of an idea as a stop gap option and even potential long term starter.

James : Get off the WR kick and Watkins !!! Watkins is or was a fine college player. This is the NFL . The Raiders have extreme young WR talent Sir: Moore, Streater, Holmes, Butler and yes even Jenkins. Watkins would not displace any of the Raider wideouts . He will make a roster and learn the ropes . This is not the ACC patsy league my friend . The Raiders need a QB since MM or TP are great yes I said great number 2 QBs !’

    • James Arcellana

You think WAY too highly of our wide receivers… WAY too highly…

    • Carl Cockerham

Are you high? Watkins is better than all of them put together! Not one receiver you named has been consistent. That’s why they were either undrafted or late-round picks.

    • Carl Cockerham

That’s the problem. The Raiders are so horrible that when a player has a few good games, he becomes great in their eyes. Just like everyone thinks slow Rashad Jennings is going to carry them to the promised land. I hope Latavius Murray can do it because Jennings is average, Streater is okay and Moore has potential he hasn’t reached in four years. Let’s get some new talent!!!

  • TJA

James : I know a little but not a bunch !! To elucidate , I have watched Pro ball for forty five years . The press keeps trashing your WRs unfairlyI might add. James watch some of the other games and young WRs. Brother with few exceptions most could not carry Rod Streater’s play book let alone work like he does and take hitslikehe is from the 60s. Moore needs to work on his consistency and Holmes and Butler are about to explode . I beleive in Gilmore .

    • Carl Cockerham

      Ummmm, Streater is inconsistent too!

    • charlie

tja if you’ve been watching football for forty five years why are you wasting your time with the raiders. its just like watching the cubs and saying wait til next year geez!!!

  • TJA

Give this kids a QB like Bree’s, Brady, Rodgers or Jesus Manning and watch out !!

  • TJA

James do not take offense because your columns are great . The Raiders will rise again sooner than later be patient

    • James Arcellana

Oh my man. Didnt mean to seem like I take offense. Never do. I love how much you comment I just really think we need help at WR haha. I love Holmes and Streater but they arent ready to step up and be a number one. And yeah, with a great QB they would be much improved, but finding a great QB is really hard

  • TJA

Love the debate guys. Do not sell your dogs in the pen short . All your WRs work hard not one slacker . I hope Watkins does well . He is a Florida boy with talent . However , I never get carried away with draft status or draft round . Remember two QBs named Montana and Brady . How about Favre ? I feel contrary to many Reggie knows what he is doing . No fools gold there !’ Just be patient . The days of Hewitt Dixon( yes his mom and dad were friends and were the cooks employed in our fraternity house at UF, younger brother Dwayne receiver at UF now NCState receivers coach) , Lamonica, Wells, Hubbard, Branch, Hendricks, Brown, Tatum, Casper , Belintinkoff , Upshaw , MDden, Blanda, and many others should not be forgotten . But remember to get to the top if the mountain you start climbing at the bottom . The Silver and Black have suffered for the last 10 years but the attitude is changing and the old Raiders shall return if not next year soon . Keep the faith James and others .

  • TJA

Do you James in all honesty think the Seahawks WRs are head and shoulders above the Raider WRs? If so , it is because of NC State’s forgotten QB Wisconsin find Russell Wilson !’

  • Frank Bentz

With their schedule next season , 9 games against teams with 10 wins or better , they will be in top 5 again next year , trade down and get as many picks as possible 1 player wont turn this team around ,if they do take a QB , I think it should be Bortals , their drafts have been horrible , so my vote is to trade down

  • TJA

Frank : Agree schedule is difficult but the NFL has 4-6 elite teams with the rest being average to mediocre . The Raiders with decent defense healthy O line and above average QB play can win 7-9 games . The running game will surprise if this UCF kid Murray is healthy. The key is closing the right games . Please recall this years team was 3-4 before the roof caved in and the losses were the rule rather than the exception .

    • Frank Bentz

did murry even play this year , Tiawan Jones was suppose to be a great back to , yet he never made it on the field, they were 3-4 early once teams defended Pryor,it was all down hill , they go 7-9 if everything goes right for them and their opponants have everything go wrong , trade down get picks

  • TJA

    Closing the tight games…

  • TJA

The team must play without fear because in reality there is nothing to lose . The Raiders were worried about trying not to lose instead of closing the door .The team seemed lost after the Kansas City game !! The team seemed only interested in making sure Matt developed regardless of the opponent or game situation to the detriment of the team and other players. Not to bash McGloin because he faired okay but to much emphasis was place on him and not the team .

  • TJA

It further seemed the coaching staff was endeared to a handful of players but not the team . This must change .

  • AF Raider in Germany

I cast my vote for trading back unless Bridgewater or Clowney fall to #5 . . . we do have a lot of wholes and need as much young talent added to our roster as possible. Especially considering that our GM likes to build through the draft and won’t be going on a big ticket-free agent shopping spree with our prodigious cap space–as much as i would like solve our DL and OL problems via free agency

  • TJA

Charlie: Love the underdog that was at the top once but now must show everyone who forgot the Marcus Allen’s , Tim Browns , W. Brown or the ghosts of the great 60 and 70s with Stabler et. al . That is why Charlie !! No agenda !! Love that Raider pride and rebel mentality established by Davis and Madden

  • Andy Aguilar

Trade down in the 1st round, then go after Derrick Carr.

  • Travis King

I wish everyone would stop trying to get Freeman on our roster. There are better players in the draft, like Bortel, Carr, McCarron’s. And we need defensive impact players now. And O-line players, another running back. So keep the Freeman’s away from Oakland.

  • Travis King

O -lineman like Matthews, Steen. The game is won in the trinches. Either one of these would strengthen our line power. No matter who is back at QB or running the ball, if the line is no good, It does not matter. Defensive line. We need help, depth and productivity.

  • TJA

Travis : O line !! Your comments in my opinion are right on !! The hell with the flash the game is won by the lineman . Especially O line .
