The Bears still have tough decisions to make with 23 of their own players as unrestricted free agents. This week’s top five looks at the five best.
5. KR/PR Devin Hester
The league’s greatest return man of all-time has 18 career touchdowns on kick and punt returns. He seems to have lost a step over the years but could return for a couple more seasons. It’s hard to imagine Hester in another uniform.
4. LB D.J. Williams
The veteran linebacker was brought in the bridge the gap from Brian Urlacher to Jon Bostic. Williams ended up missing most of the season with a pectoral injury. He might be worth it to bring back for another season. Bostic looked far from being ready to take over the reigns last season.
3. QB Josh McCown
McCown was the Bears’ savior when Jay Cutler went down with injuries. He looked more than comfortable in Marc Trestman’s system. He has already said he doesn’t want to retire. The Bears would be best served by bringing him back for at least another season.
2. DE Corey Wootton
Wootton played hurt and out of position for most of last year. He was dealing with a hip injury and was forced inside on the defensive line due to other team injuries. The season before, he blossomed with seven sacks. The Bears should cut ties with Julius Peppers and commit to Wootton long term.
1. DT Henry Melton
It can be said everything fell apart when Melton went down. His presence on the defensive line was missed immensely. He won’t command nearly the same amount as before the torn ACL but is still high on a lot of team’s radars. The Bears can ill afford to lose him given their poor run defense and pass rush.
