The NFL honors award show took place Saturday night and it was nice to see the rest of the NFL recognize the type of season San Diego put together. Keenan Allen finished second in the Offensive Rookie of the Year voting to Green Bay running back Eddie Lacy. Lacy had a great year compiling 1,178 yards and 11 touchdowns. Finishing second to that type of performance is nothing to be ashamed of, but Allen was recognized by the fans as the Pepsi NEXT Rookie of the Year. This award takes into account both offensive and defensive players and is decided by fan voting, so in a lot of ways Allen received quite the honor here finishing ahead of defensive stud Kiko Alonso.
Additionally, Philip Rivers was named the Associated Press NFL Comeback Player of the Year. The veteran quarterback edged out Broncos running back Knowshon Moreno and announced to the rest of the league that he still has plenty of fuel left in the tank.
At the end of the day, these awards are fairly superficial. We saw Peyton Manning take home his fifth MVP award and get blown out in the Super Bowl. Next year there is one award we want to see in San Diego and that is the Lombardi trophy.
Reasons to have hope in the 2014 San Diego Chargers.
