I talked about this a bit last week, so I’ll just rehash what I previously discussed. Since it seems Michael Vick’s days in Philadelphia are over, the Eagles are (probably) now in the market for a third quarterback.
With how the franchise has asserted itself the past few seasons — both with roster moves and coaching changes — it appears that the Eagles are headed in a more youthful direction. Because of this, it’s hard to think they’d address their need for an extra arm in any way other than through the draft.
The Eagles will select the best player available, but they also could wait a few rounds to really grab the quarterback that interests them. I previewed a few last week, and my feelings haven’t changed regarding that being the route the franchise will take.
If they decide otherwise though, there won’t be much to choose from in free agency. Here are cover 32’s top 10 free agent quarterbacks heading as of right now:
1. Josh Freeman
2. Michael Vick
3. Matt Cassel
4. Josh McCown
5. Matt Flynn
6. Tim Tebow
7. Vince Young
8. Rex Grossman
9. Chad Henne
10. Tavaris Jackson
The obvious choice from this list would be Vick, but I think he believes he can start elsewhere. I personally think Philadelphia is the best fit for him at this point in his career, but that’s just my opinion.
Aside from Vick, none of these options are all that intriguing. Josh Freeman has the potential to be a starter again, but his issues with the Buccaneers are worrisome. He’s also probably in the same boat as Vick, as he wants to be a starter.
Matt Cassel and Matt Flynn have probably maxed out their potential, while Rex Grossman, Chad Henne and Josh McCown are all getting up there in age. I don’t think Tavaris Jackson is that good, Tim Tebow has already started his TV career and OH MY GOD WE REALLY DON’T NEED VINCE YOUNG AND HIS “DREAM TEAM” SHENANIGANS AGAIN.
So yeah. Get ready for a mid-round quarterback selection, Philadelphia.
