Our cover32 editorial staff released its top ten list for free agent tight ends today. There’s no doubt the Chiefs need some help at tight end.
While Anthony Fasano certainly isn’t a bad player, he is not an explosive option at the position. He only caught 23 balls for 200 yards and three touchdowns. Not having a threat at the position in today’s NFL is a hinderance to the passing game. Having one adds another dimension.
Now, I wouldn’t expect the Chiefs to go after any of these guys. One of the reasons why is a guy they already have on the roster that didn’t play last year: Travis Kelce.
Kelce was the 63rd overall pick in the last NFL draft. He had microfracture surgery, which wiped out his rookie season. But Kelce has the potential to bring the big play ability and versatility the Chiefs are looking for. In his last year at Cincinnati, Kelce caught 45 passes for 722 yards and eight touchdowns.
If he can come back healthy for the Chiefs, he could be a weapon. But if the Chiefs try to get another tight end, I’d think it would be through the draft as opposed to free agency.
