Texans Should Use the Number One Pick on Jadeveon Clowney and here is why

There has been a lot of talk about Jadeveon Clowney, is he is worthy of the first overall pick in the draft?  What started this conversation was last year Clowney nearly took Vincent Smith’s head off in the Outback Bowl.  That got a lot of people’s attention and all year people have talked about is he worthy of the #1 pick.  So should the Texans take a gamble on him?

I looked at and compared Clowney’s stats to the guy he would line up opposite, J.J. Watt.  Watt in his last two years at Wisconsin had 44 and 62 tackles respectively; he also had 4.5 and 7 sacks over those two years.  Compare those numbers to Clowney who had 54 and 40 tackles and 13 and 3 sacks over his past two years, similar to Watts’s numbers.

This shows he can play at a high level and Clowney played in the SEC which ESPN ranked as the toughest conference in the nation this year.  Clowney has the potential to be a great player in the NFL. (ESPN.com – College conference power rankings).

Clowney has the stats, plays in an elite conference, and has some big play highlights to his name.  If you pair him with J.J. Watt on the Texans defensive line who knows what those two could do to opposing QBs.  The Texans no doubt need some help on their Defensive line, they ranked 29th in sacks last year with 32 total.  J.J. Watt got 10.5 of those, that’s right a third of the total teams sacks, he needs some help and Clowney can be that guy.

The Texans should draft Clowney with the 1st overall pick; he has the size at 6-6 274lbs and skill to start right away.  The Texans also need to draft a QB but Bill O’Brien has proven he can make the most of lesser QBs so they should draft Clowney and take a QB in the later rounds.

Clowney has the potential to be a huge impact player, pairing him with the likes of J.J. Watt almost isn’t even fair to consider.  The Texans should draft Clowney with the number one pick this year and start to shore up a once feared defense.
