DT options for the Dolphins should Soliai and Starks walk

Randy Starks vs Paul Soliai has been the lingering debate all off season, however not many ever pictured a scenario where both players could walk this offseason.

Barry Jackson of The Miami Herald reported Wednesday that Miami has yet to offer a contract to Starks or Soliai however they do remain interested in both players. It has also been reported that Soliai has already sold his South Florida house and moved back home to Utah.

In addition Armando had reported earlier this week that Paul has already received interest from 5 other teams and will be a very attractive free agent should money not pony up the big bucks.

The question then becomes what does Miami do should both players walk.

Well, Jared Oddrick would obviously move up into one of the two starting defensive tackle roles however the team would still have a gap to fill to strengthen up their defensive front.

The draft route is always a cheap and desirable option however for now were going to look at a couple of free agent DT options.

Henry Melton – Exclusive rights Bears free agent, coming off a big injury but very productive player in his time in Chicago.

Jason Hatcher – Would be an attractive option but likely to return with the Cowboys. 8th ranked rated DT by PFF last year.

B.J. Raji – Declining production since the Packers Super Bowl year

Tony McDaniel – Former Dolphins had success in Seattle, not quite as disruptive force as Big Paul but in addition to a potential DT addition in the draft could be a nice complimentary piece back in Miami. 15th ranked rated DT by PFF last year. Ranked 3rd in the NFL in run stop % among DT’s.

Linval Joseph- talented young player was ranked 21st in the NFL last year by PFF at the DT position only one spot behind Paul. Also likely to be a cheaper option.

Red Bryant – Another big boy to stuff the run, hot off a Super Bowl run with Seattle

Ryan Pickett

Will be interesting to see how what happens once free agency starts but it seems anything is possible.
