Playoffs likely to expand in 2015

The Arizona Cardinals would have made it into the playoffs.

If these rules were in place.

According to Pro Football Talk, the league is more likely to expand the playoff field to 14 teams from its current 12 teams.

Arizona would have made it in last season in the NFC and Pittsburgh would have gotten in on the AFC side. The details are still to be worked out on the scheduling and byes. More likely than not, the top seed in the conference would be the only one to get a first-round bye. The second-seed would have to suit up on the first weekend.

Another key question is how do you figure out who plays who in the next round? Could the NFL re-seed its teams after the Wild Card round like the NHL does after its first round? It would make the playoffs more interesting if that happened.

The NFL is getting closer to having half of the league make the playoffs like the NBA and NHL does. It might be the right answer if the league is trying to expand revenue.
