Assessing the St. Louis Rams’ needs on the interior offensive line

Yesterday we unveiled the top 10 interior offensive linemen that will be available in this year’s draft.

The big question between now and then is how big of a need will center and guard be for the Rams at that point? The answer to that question relies heavily upon whether the Rams re-sign Rodger Saffold. If Saffold is re-signed, he will almost certainly play right guard, as he expertly did toward the end of last season.

That will then help the rest of the offensive line shift into place, with Joe Barksdale and Jake Long (if he’s healthy) opening the season at the tackle spots, leaving just the left guard and center spot open for competition. The Rams still have Tim Barnes and Barrett Jones on the roster to possibly compete for those spots. (Harvey Dahl and Scott Wells are likely cap casualties.)

However, if Saffold is not retained, the Rams’ offensive line would be in a state of turmoil. The team would certainly have to look long and hard at the draft and free agency for options to fill the three interior spots along the line. But again, a lot of this depends on what happens with Saffold.
