The Packers’ secondary has been a bit of a laughing stock the past few years. Ted Thompson, Mark Murphy, and company have tried to address some of the defensive needs via the draft, but they expected more out of their safeties, and they probably expected more of their cornerbacks to stay healthy the entire season. They did get a great season from Sam Shields, and Tramon Williams finished the season on a high note. Shields is entering free agency, however, as the Packers couldn’t get a deal done with the cornerback. So, where do the Packers turn to address their shortcomings in the defensive backfield?
They may look to free agency. The Packers, as we’ve mentioned on this site before, have quite a bit of wiggle room with their cap space and can make a much bigger splash in free agency this year than has come to be expected. The goal still should be to sign Sam Shields back to a multi year deal, but might they also look to add a dynamic safety like Jairus Byrd?
