Six exclusive rights free agents received offers from the Oakland Raiders yesterday. The team will retain the services of linebacker Kaelin Burnett, defensive back Chimdi Chekwa, safety Brandian Ross, fullback Jamize Olawale, running back Jeremy Stewart and offensive lineman Matt McCants.
Exclusive rights free agents must stay with the team if a minimum contract is tendered to them. They have no ability to negotiate anything better unless the team decides they would like to. To be eligible for this designation, players must have two or fewer years of service. Cornerback Chemdi Chekwa is a special case because he’s been in the league for three seasons. Usually players with three seasons become a restricted free agent. But because Chekwa has spent time on the practice squad and not actually on the team, he has qualified.
None of these are major signings for the Raiders, but they are all significant when it comes to depth and filling out the roster. Especially considering they represent guys who provide depth at the league minimum price tag.
