Bears shift their focus to other free agents

The Bears lost out on the Michael Bennett sweepstakes today. The defensive end turned down more money from Chicago to stay in Seattle. It’s now scrambling time for the Bears as they look to fill holes on their defensive line.

Michael Johnson from the Cincinnati Bengals could be the player the team turns to next. He’s an athletic pass rusher who had a down sack season last year but still provides a better pass rush than the team generated last year.

If the Bears want to skip Johnson, they can look towards Oakland’s Lamarr Houston. He’s a hybrid lineman who can line up either inside or outside. This might come in handy just in case the team loses out on Henry Melton who has generated some interest from the Dallas Cowboys.

Safety is still an issue for the Bears. They could go for hard hitting veteran Donte Whitner from the San Francisco 49ers. He still remains behind Jairus Byrd and T.J. Ward who are both expected to get big bucks on the open market.

An intriguing option could be talking Julius Peppers into restructuring his deal and bringing in NFC North veteran Jared Allen. Allen would likely love to stay within the division he’s comfortable with and stick it to the Minnesota Vikings who believe he’s got nothing left in the tank.
