New York Jets make an official decision on Santonio Holmes

The New York Jets have finally made an announcement about Santonio Holmes.

The Holmes release was pretty obviously coming for some time. Holmes has seemed discontent for some time in New York. He hasn’t been a productive receiver on or off the field in years. And his constant head-butting with the media has become somewhat of a distraction over the years.

When Santonio Holmes was Santonio Holmes, the baggage was worth it. Now, there just isn’t any reason to have Holmes on the roster for such a high price. So the Jets let the receiver, who had 23 receptions for 456 yards this past season, go earlier Monday afternoon. With free agency starting Tuesday at 4 p.m. EST, this was really the last day the Jets had to make a move.

Rex Ryan did release a statement through the Jets’ Twitter account:

Holmes finishes his four-year Jets career with 146 receptions for 2,128 yards. He played in all 16 games just once, his second year in New York. His best year in green came in his first season with the Jets, when he hauled in 52 catches for 746 yards and six touchdowns after missing the first four games of the season because of a drug suspension.

The Jets also tendered restricted free agent Nick Bellore.
