Free Agency: Revis’ replacement

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have found their replacement to what looks like a lost cause in cornerback Darrelle Revis.

Late Tuesday night. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and pro bowl cornerback Alterraun Verner agreed on a four-year deal worth $26.5 million.

Verner provides a solid direct replacement for Revis, who appears to be gone from Tampa Bay, whether via trade or release on Wednesday.

With Sam Shields and Brent Grimes off the market. Verner emerged as a popular cornerback, who eyed Atlanta, New York(Jets), Pittsburgh, Denver and New England before finally ending up in Tampa Bay.

This is a huge score for the Bucs. Not only does he come at a fairly cheap price for his play. Verner is 25 and coming into his prime.

Verner has 11 interceptions in his career and had his best year as a pro in 2013. Not only did he make the pro bowl, but he was voted AP second-team all pro and was the AFC’s co leader in interceptions, tied with Tashuan Gipson of Cleveland.

Verner is tenacious and savvy smart player that will bolster the secondary of Tampa Bay.

Now backing up newly acquired pass rushers of Michael Johnson and Clinton McDonald. The secondary is improved and Verner will provide great coverage for years to come. Tampa Bay is slowly building a defense that will be much improved and full of play makers in the 2014 campaign.
