Dallas Signs Trio in the First Couple of Days of FA

The Cowboys have been subtracting more than adding talent to the roster in the last few days. Even though they jettisoned only two players, it was the two players that they let go. Miles Austin has been on the releasing block for several months now so his release was no surprise. Letting go of DeMarcus Ware has had some fans jeering and cheering. Some are jeering due to the fact that the 32nd ranked defense let the face of the defense leave to the Denver Broncos via Free Agency. The others are actually cheering because of the team has saved some money and can get more bang for the buck. But just wait….he has saved the money but now he is spending on some questionable talent.

Jerry Jones has signed three players that aren’t exactly Ware material. On the second day of the frenzy known as Free Agency, the Cowboys signed Houston Texan DT Terrell McClain. McClain has averaged ½ a tackle per game last season. His total career tackles is 29 in a 4-year career.
The next to ink a deal is Denver Bronco DE Jeremy Mincey. Mincey was a sixth round pick of the New England Patriots and didn’t make it through the preseason before being released and picked up by the San Francisco 49ers in 2006. Even then, he didn’t play a down his rookie season. He was placed on the 49er practice squad where he was eventually signed by the Jacksonville Jaguars. He finally saw some action in 2007 with the Jaguars he played 6 games and made 10 tackles. He played with the Jaguars for the next 6 seasons and was released in December of 2013. He was picked up by the Broncos as played 2 games and made 1 tackle. For his career, he has made 161 tackles from playing 66 games.

Today, March 13, the Cowboys picked up LB Will Herring from the New Orleans Saints. Last season he played in all 16 games obtaining 13 tackles for the second year in a row. Nothing more than a special teams player most of his career, Dallas may try to play him more at the linebacker position. In 2010, he spent a few seasons with the Seattle Seahawks. The Seahawks originally signed him to an undrafted free agent contract in 2007. With his combined stats with the Seahawks and the Saints, he has made 144 tackles in 97 games.

The Cowboys have yet to address their need in the defensive secondary. Rumors are swirling that they are trying to sign Anthony Spencer after Jason Hatcher took a big contract (4 years, $27 million) with the Washington Redskins. It is also rumored that Steve Smith had Dallas listed as a place he would want to play in case he was not wearing a Carolina Panther uniform. Smith may want to wear a blue star but the Cowboys don’t seem too interested at the moment. The focus is to repair the 32nd ranked defense from last season.

The Cowboys are also looking at Chicago Bear DE Henry Melton. Melton is coming off ACL surgery so he might be able to come in at a “Jerry-type” kind of price.
