Dolphins finalize 2 year deals with feisty CB Finnegan and OG Shelley Smith

Off season goal #1: Resign Brent Grimes (Check)

Once the Dolphins were able to bring back Grimes the question became who would play opposite to him.

With Nolan Carroll leaving for the Eagles, would Dennis Hickey go into next season with sophomore Jamar Taylor as a starter or would the team bring in a vet to help transition before turning to their young corners.

Well it appears the new Dolphins GM has gone with the latter. The Dolphins will be hoping a fully-healthy Finnegan is closer to his 2011 grade (+17.4) than his last 2 years (-12.2 average)

Finnegan who was a very solid player in 2010 and 2012 has seen his play decline to the tune of being the 109th of 110 corners ranked on PFF. Finnegan is an aggressive in your face corner that doesn’t exactly fit the typical “Joe Philbin” player profile but has had notable success in the league. The Finnegan signing will come with its questions as it isn’t known which Cortland Finnegan the team will be getting.

The Dolphins then wasted no time to take the next step in helping retool their OL. The Dolphins signed the former Rams Guard tp 2 years, $5.5m dollar deal. Smith who doesn’t have that many games started behind him was an excellent run blocker in St Louis and figures to be the teams new starting LG.

Smith was the 4th ranked run blocker last season by PFF with a +12.3 grade.

RT remains the glaring hole the Dolphins still face on the OL.
