Former Chiefs safety and kick return specialist Quintin Demps will join his fourth NFL team after signing with the New York Giants early Sunday morning.
Demps had four interceptions and nine passes defended last season with the Chiefs, but the spotlight was on his ability to return kickoffs. His average of 30.1 yards per kickoff return and total of 992 return yards ranked third among kick returners in 2013. He also returned a kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown.
Demps will provide depth at safety behind Antrel Rolle and serve as a reliable return man for the Giants, who failed to sign Jacoby Jones from the Baltimore Ravens.
Sanders Commings, who suffered a collarbone injury early last November that hindered his playing time in 2013, will likely fill Demps’ free safety position this year. Knile Davis will become the primary kick returner.
With Demps headed to New York, and Husain Abdullah staying in Kansas City, Kendrick Lewis remains the last unsigned free agent safety from the Chiefs roster.
