The Carolina Panthers have reached an agreement with free agent wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery, according to multiple sources. The 31-year old Cotchery caught 46 passes last season with the Pittsburgh Steelers and has 437 career receptions in 146 games with the Steelers and the New York Jets.
The NC State product fills a huge void left by releasing Steve Smith and receivers Brandon LaFell and Ted Ginn Jr. signing elsewhere this offseason. Cotchery being the number one receiver for Cam Newton isn’t too appealing, but is a hell of a lot better than having Marvin McNutt as the top option.
It remains to be seen if Cotchery will wear his usual number 89 jersey that was previously occupied by Smith.
