The Carolina Panthers signed quarterback Joe Webb and wide receiver Tiquan Underwood on Friday, in addition to cornerback Antoine Cason. Webb spent four seasons with the Minnesota Vikings splitting time between quarterback and wide receiver, but he’ll only play quarterback according to the Panthers’ Twitter account.

The 27-year old is 6’4″ 220 lbs and ran a 4.4.3 40 yard dash at the NFL Combine, freakish size and speed for a quarterback. However, he’s very raw as a passer, which explains his limited play time for a team that has had serious quarterback issues. He started for the Vikings in their most recent playoff appearance against the Green Bay Packers with starter Christian Ponder sidelined and was 11-30 for 180 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Webb should be the third quarterback on the depth chart behind starter Cam Newton and backup Derek Anderson, who re-signed earlier this month. It would be interesting if Webb is used in any “wildcat” type packages, given his athleticism, though that remains to be seen.
Even if Webb won’t be helping the Panthers’ meager receiving corps, Underwood will. The 6’1″ 183 lb. speedster ran a 4.31 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine but has played for three teams in five seasons for a reason. He has begun to tap a bit more into his potential the past two seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers however, and set career highs in receiving yards and touchdowns despite only being on the active roster for 12 games. His 18.3 yards per reception would’ve been third in the NFL had he qualified. This could be another excellent value signing from general manager Dave Gettleman to replace Ted Ginn Jr. Perhaps most importantly, though, Underwood has arguably the best hair in the NFL.
