The most predominant theme of the offseason for the Chargers has been “how can we improve our defense?”. While the stats will show the most logical area of improvement is the secondary — and all Chargers fans have surely spoken of the need at corner — the nose tackle position in the 3-4 defense is the singular position that can completely change a defense. Remember the dominant Chargers teams of the past decade? The key, defensively was Jamal “the wall” or “J Wall” Williams. The former nose tackle possessed unbelievable quickness and strength and at 6’3” 350 pounds, he was a nightmare for any offensive line.

There is no doubt the Chargers need to get better in the secondary, but finding the next Jamal Williams would make this defense special for years to come. Cam Thomas has left for Pittsburgh and Sean Lissemore is a quality, young player, but the Chargers have some options in a deep 2014 draft. I expect the Bolts to take a nose tackle at some point, and with guys like Louis Nix III and Will Sutton available, San Diego could find a new player to give interior linemen fits.
