MAILBAG: How does Jared Allen fit with the Bears?

The Bears made some big news this morning by signing former Vikings defensive end Jared Allen. We immediately got some questions about Allen and how he fits into this team. What better way to kick of this week’s mailbag than start right there.

How will Jared Allen fit into this defensive line? -Arlene in Downtown

Well Arlene, Allen even turning 32 next month is still a premier pass rusher. He will likely be rotated in on obvious passing downs. He does struggle against the run so expect Willie Young and Israel Idonije to spell him from time to time. Where he will help the most is on third down. It allows the Bears to kick Lamarr Houston inside and provide a rush from up the middle while Allen and Young get after the quarterback from the outside. It provides the Bears a ton of depth and more flexibility on the line.

Does the Allen move change what they do in the draft? -Mike in Kansas City

Phil Emery has always been the type of GM to fill his needs in free agency and take the best player in the draft. I don’t see that changing this year either. Look for him to grab the best defensive player whether it’s Aaron Donald, Justin Gilbert or Haha Clinton-Dix. They are all players who serve a need for the Bears.

Anything else big from the Bears on the horizon?- Jim in Beverly

This is likely it for the big name spending. The Bears were able to release Earl Bennett and shuffle some of Jay Cutler’s money around to bring in Allen. At this point, they will likely keep an eye out for any under the radar moves that can help the team but don’t expect anything earth shattering. They will now shift their focus to the draft in May.
