Outside linebacker prospects must stop the run for New Orleans Saints

The Saints believe they have found their pass rush specialist in Junior Galette, but at number 27 overall there’s a chance they look to the draft to balance their defensive line with talent.

Other than going chalk and drafting the best outside linebacker on the board, the Saints will put a paramount on that player’s ability to stand up strong in the run game. Any pass rush ability on top of that would be a plus, especially considering the amount of single-man blocking they are likely to face.

Personally, outside of Khalil Mack from Buffalo there is only one other outside linebacker that I believe fits what the Saints are looking for (especially in the first round).

That guy is Ryan Shazier.

Although Anthony Barr seems to be the consensus number two guy on the list, Shazier has more experience playing the way he’d be asked to in New Orleans. Barr can certainly get after the quarterback, but past that he leaves a bit to be desired.

If they decide to go outside linebacker in the first round my guess is it will be Shazier, or they may try to convert Kony Ealy/Dee Ford from defensive end to outside linebacker.

If they go another route, expect them to pick up somebody later on to add depth and competition.

Who might they add? Take a look at cover32’s top ten list of prospects at the outside linebacker position.
