Will the St. Louis Rams draft a top outside linebacker prospect?

Much has been made of the Rams’ intentions in the upcoming NFL draft. This is because when you hold the no. 2 and no. 13 picks in the first round, it tends to put you in a pretty powerful position.

I have argued that the Rams might as well go defense in the first round – specifically Jadeveon Clowney – in an effort to try to terrorize quarterbacks and win football games that way. The idea is that the Rams are much closer to being an elite defense than climbing an uphill battle and making the offense good enough to be considered well above league average.

Therefore, don’t be surprised if the Rams take a long, hard look at one of these top 10 outside linebacker prospects if Clowney isn’t available or if the Rams trade down and the team decides Khalil Mack or Anthony Barr is head and shoulders above the rest of the field.

I don’t think the Rams select a linebacker early. They are most likely perfectly content with JoLonn Dunbar and Ray Ray Armstrong battling it out for the starting gig. Also, since the Rams run the nickel I don’t see them taking a player early, especially in the top 10, who would see the field less than half the time.

With the signing of Britt, I think Rams now do not have a big need for WR. In light of that Khalil Mack should be the pick. He would be a huge upgrade over Dunbar and is one of the top five prospects in the draft.
