Meet the Indianapolis Colts Director of College Scouting

A former player and coach, a runner up for the GM position with the Cleveland Browns in 2008 and an American football executive, quite the astute resume and we are more than happier to have him as a key asset to our team. Let me introduce you to a man behind the scenes of the Colts success, T.J. McCreight. McCreight is the Director of College Scouting for the Indianapolis Colts and has held this position since February of 2012.

In the case of the Colts, it was first reported that T.J. McCreight would be leaving the desert for Indianapolis. McCreight was with the Arizona Cardinals for four years, the Cleveland Browns for four years and the Baltimore Ravens before that. This seems to suggest some sort of connection with current Colts head coach Chuck Pagano who also had stints in Baltimore and Cleveland around the same time McCreight was there.

McCreight is a northeast Ohio native and played football at Liberty University under former Browns head coach Sam Rutigliano. Liberty’s athletic teams compete in Division 1 of the NCAA and are collectively known as the Liberty Flames. They compete in the Big South Conference. Prior to entering the NFL, McCreight was an assistant coach at Delaware State University and Oberlin College. He is married and has two children.

McCreight is briefly mentioned in John Feinstein’s book “Next Man Up” about the 2004 Ravens. Feinstein was best known here in Indiana for his “Season on the Brink” book which chronicles a year in the life of Indiana University basketball and their beloved coach then Bobby Knight. The mention of McCreight in “Next Man Up” is very brief however controversial as he was instructed at the last minute to not turn in the card requesting Roderick Green for the Ravens, a pass-rushing linebacker from Central Missouri State. Green was considered raw talent within the scout’s however the Ravens would have had him higher on their board except that his grade on the wonderlic was mitigated by his having a learning disability which caused him to test poorly. The wonderlic test is a popular group intelligence test used to assess the aptitude of prospective employees for learning and problem-solving in a range of occupations as well as it helps selected prospects that are separated from rejected applicants with the intention of choosing the person who will be the most successful and make the most valuable contributions to the organization.

As you see there are a variety of different connections here which would lead to him on the path to become a “flame” within the Indianapolis Colts organization. Stemming from the connection with Pagano way back when and then again with the icon Bobby Knight. Thus, the way the hierarchy seems to be at West 56th Street with Grigson at the helm the Indianapolis Colt’s battleship is clearly stacked with a great scout in T.J. McCreight whom you now know a little more about. We will continue to see his scouting success as he paves the way for the young college athletes to make their own names in the NFL never forgetting that McCreight is to thank. Blessed to have T.J. on our side and even more so when his vision in his scouts dance in the end zone.
