Cover32 staff does its mock draft; Detroit Lions end up with a cornerback

The staff got together and bestowed upon ourselves the honor of playing general manager for each of our hometown teams. So, for one day, I was able to take the reigns away from Martin Mayhew and Tom Lewand, if only in an imaginary sense.

Each editor at was given the task of selecting their respective teams first round pick. As the Detroit Lions had the 10th overall pick, I only had to list my top 10 choices. As the first three choices I listed were selected ahead of the 10th spot, in our mock draft we landed on cornerback Justin Gilbert.

Here’s the order I put them in, and the first two I fully realized wouldn’t happen, but, you never know and I was just covering all my bases. It seems the Lions have done the same thing as they have had both Clowney and Watkins in for visits.

1. Sammy Watkins
2. Khalil Mack
3. Mike Evans
4. Justin Gilbert
5. Darqueze Denard
6. Eric Ebron
7. Ha Ha Clinton Dix
8. Kony Ealy
9. Calvin Pryor
10. Taylor Lewan

Obviously, Clowney would be in there as well, but as much as I believed Watkins and Mack would be gone, I absolutely knew Clowney would be gone. I did have hope for Mike Evans though. If this mock draft held true, I’d be thrilled if the Detroit Lions ended up with Justin Gilbert. Just so you know, I prefaced the Taylor Lewan selection with the note that I would likely start watching a different team religiously if they did choose him.
