Is the heir to Earl Thomas in this year’s draft?

Here’s the thing. The NFL is a copycat league, and nobody gets copied more than the Super bowl champions. This offseason it seems every contender is trying to emulate the Seahawks’ top-ranked defense.

– Denver signed T.J. Ward and Aqib Talib

– New England signed Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner

– New Orleans signed Jairus Byrd and Champ Bailey

Clearly having a physical, talented secondary is now all the rage in the NFL. But none of them are going to be on the same level as Seattle’s. The biggest reason for that is the Seahawks have the best safety in the game. His name is Earl Thomas, and there’s only one of him. He anchors the Seahawks defense and may very well be the single most important piece of the championship puzzle.

But that’s not going to stop teams from looking for a guy who can do all the things that ET does. What better way to do that than to build a player from the ground up? This year’s NFL Draft is by all accounts one of the deepest in years, and there are plenty of top-notch safeties to be found. cover32 has a list of the top ten at the position.

Number five on our list, local product Deone Bucannon will reportedly be visiting the Seahawks today, per Ian Rapoport:

Will one of them become the heir to Earl Thomas? Only time will tell.
