Aldon Smith was involved in this. Aldon Smith did that. There has not been much positive talk about Smith since he was First Team All-Pro back in 2012.
If you haven’t heard already, Smith was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport on April 13 on a charge of false report of a bomb threat. At this moment, he could be facing misdemeanor charges.
The biggest question that the 49ers face now is whether or not the team will give Smith a fifth-year option for the 2015 season, in which he could make $9.75 million.
In his three-year career as a 49er, Smith has totaled 42 sacks, five forced fumbles and 114 tackles. He was second behind J.J. Watt in sacks with 19.5 in 2012.
It seems to be a trend for students who have attended or are attending the University of Missouri. Smith played two years of football at Mizzou before announcing that he would enter the draft. Earlier this month, sophomore Dorial Green-Beckham was dismissed from the team for his actions off the field.
The Missouri football head coach, Gary Pinkel, made a tough decision to dismiss Green-Beckham, but Mizzou could not keep a player like that around. The situation that is happening with the Missouri Tigers is closely related to the problem at hand with the 49er organization. Does the team keep him for a long period of time (a possible franchise tag) or do they not give him his team option?
49ers General Manager Trent Baalke does not want to leave Smith, but he and the rest of the team’s management are still discussing what to do with him because the whole squad is a family to him.
According to ESPN, “Asked if he hopes Smith will play this season and in 2015, Baalke replied: ‘And in 2016 and 2017 and 2018 … You don’t just open the door and toss people out.’ Baalke said several times that the team is ‘disappointed’ in Smith’s continued missteps and that ‘they have to stop.’”
Smith has had other off-the-field issues in addition to his most recent incident at LAX. In 2012 he was charged with gun charges and in 2013 he was charged from driving drunk.
Smith is a huge asset to the 49ers defense. Without him, the 49ers could be in big trouble.
Last season, Smith played in 11 of the 16 games. Of the five he missed, the team went 5-0. However, the overall winning percentage of the teams that the 49ers played was .375 percent. So the team may have succeeded last season, but if he does not play this upcoming season, the team could find themselves in a hole that may be hard to dig out of.
49er fans want to see the talent that the seventh overall pick in 2011 can provide for the team in the upcoming season(s), but with his off the field issues, it may be difficult to see what Smith has in store for San Francisco this season.
Drafting a rookie to back him up or possibly replace him is a possibility, but we will not only have to see how the court handles his problems, but also the 49ers front office and coaching staff.
