Courtesy of last night’s trade with the Minnesota Vikings, the Seahawks will have two picks in tonight’s second round of the NFL Draft. Here are some of the top prospects that John Schneider and Pete Carroll might take at #40.
Austin Seferian Jenkins – TE Washington
We know that the Seahawks crave a big-body tight end or wide receiver that can catch jump balls in the end zone. That’s why they went out and signed Chris Matthews of the CFL and why they continue to show interest in Jermichael Finley. But no roster spot is guaranteed on this team. Expect Seattle to take a big guy with soft hands in the 2nd round to compete.
Jenkins makes sense on a number of levels. He’s a local product from the Huskies and the right size. Here are his measurables:
Weight: 262 lbs.
Arm length: 33 3/4″
Hands: 9 3/4″
Bench: 20 reps
Pluses: Jenkins is nearly impossible to cover in jump ball situations. He’s as tall as an NBA small forward and more powerful. He makes guys miss and is a capable blocker.
Minuses: Jenkins does have a DUI strike against him however and the Seahawks are nothing if not big on character. He’s also not as fast as you might like.
Projection: The Falcons need a tight end to replace the retired Tony Gonzalez, but nobody else from 32-40 is likely to jump on Jenkins. There’s a good chance he’ll still be on the board and the Seahawks could do a whole lot worse than taking him.
