The Oakland Raiders front office could not be happier about how the draft has gone. They had one of their top guys unexpectedly fall to them in the first round with Khalil Mack. In the second round, they had one of their top quarterbacks fall to them in Derek Carr. Then in the third, they were able to trade back, get an extra fourth round pick and land an offensive guard who some tagged as a second round target.
But if you ask them, every team will tell you that they love how their draft has played out. Unlike most years, the Raiders are getting love from outside the front office as well. USA Today listed the Raiders as day two winners and on NFL Network Mike Mayock said that the combination of Mack and Carr was the best combination of two picks that any team had in the first two days. Then, this morning before the start of day three, Charlie Casserly of the NFL Network said that he gave the Raiders a straight A for their draft thus far.
Part of the love comes from the fact that the Raiders are getting very good value for their picks. All three of their picks so far were guys who most expected to be drafted before they were taken by the Raiders. By sitting and waiting for the draft to fall to them, the Raiders were able to get great deals rather than spending picks trying to trade players who did not fall to them.
In their three picks, the Raiders have one guy who is guaranteed to start in Khalil Mack, one guy who will compete and very well could start in Gabe Jackson and the potential franchise quarterback of the future in Derek Carr. No wonder people cannot help but give the Raiders praise.
