I’m not going to lie, I don’t always know a lot – or really anything – about some of these late-round picks.
But I’m a Mizzou fan, and therefore know a ton about the guy the Rams just picked, E.J. Gaines. Gaines was the best cornerback on Mizzou’s roster for the past three seasons. In 2013, Gaines earned first-team all-SEC honors. His best game came against Texas A&M, when he held Mike Evans to four catches for eight yards. Yes, that’s the same Evans who was drafted no. 7 overall two nights ago by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Gaines is a baller, and I wouldn’t bet against him making the team this season and making an impact. My only beef with this pick is a retroactive one. Why have the Rams selected so many defensive backs? The fourth-round pick of safety Maurice Alexander is especially mystifying, considering the Rams had taken defensive back Lamarcus Joyner in the second round, and there were plenty of quarterbacks available for the Rams to take.
But it looks like the Rams are comfortable going into 2014 with Sam Bradford as the entrenched starter and veteran Shaun Hill as the clear backup. No developmental quarterback will be on this roster.
But we’ll table that decision for another day. For now, let’s watch some E.J. Gaines highlights.
