Football Outsiders predicts Giants to win nine games in 2014

A very early version of the Football Outsiders’ win formula tabs the New York Giants as second-place finishers behind the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC East with an 9-7 record, per ESPN’s Todd McShay (h/t the Star-Ledger’s Conor Orr).

Though not ideal, the projection does not sound so ridiculous—and Football Outsiders’ 2013 results were not too far off. The NFC East race is perennially competitive with division winners and last-place finishers often as close as two games apart.

A 9-7 record for the Giants should not exclude them from postseason play. In fact, I predicted a 9-7 season a month ago in my way-too-early predictions following the release of Big Blue’s schedule with a Week 17 playoff-berth clincher against the Eagles.

The Giants have really rebuilt themselves with a lot of new faces expected to be key contributors in 2014. In the NFC, a 9-7 record could be just enough to sneak into the playoffs—and that’s all the G-Men need to make another hot run to the Super Bowl.
