San Francisco 49ers defensive end Aldon Smith is scheduled for a hearing at 1:30 p.m. local time today in San Jose, California.
A plea bargain is a possibility, according to Matt Barrows of The Sacramento Bee.
The case pertains to September DUI charges and three felony felony counts of illegal possession of an assault weapon. The 24-year-old Smith could face jail time for the latter charges.
The case does not include Smith’s April incident at Los Angeles International Airport in which he was detained for allegedly making a false bomb threat. Police say he may have been drinking that day, which doesn’t bode well for Smith, given his history with substance abuse. He missed five games last year while voluntarily attending an alcohol-rehabilitation center.
The L.A. City Attorney’s office has not filed charges at this time.
Barrows believes Smith could be suspended by the NFL, but the league will likely not take action until after his LAX case is resolved.
