Ngata’s physique, and what it means for his role

Haloti Ngata is one of the few Ravens who isn’t in attendance at OTAs this week, and now, we have a little bit of a better idea what the Ravens’ bruiser has been up to.

Ravens 24/7 posted a photo of Ngata to their Facebook account that shows the former University of Oregon standout on the beach with a boogie board:

(Ngata was actually considered for the role of Bruce Banner in the newest Avengers movie.)

Ngata, who is listed at 6-foot-4, 340-pounds, has had his weight fluctuate over his career to accommodate the different roles on the line.  And although I’m no expert on the various shirtless bodies of Haloti Ngata, I tend to think a nose tackle in today’s NFL is a bit less thin.

Based on his present physique, I speculate he will serve as more of a three-technique, meaning Brandon Williams, Timmy Jernigan and DeAngelo Tyson would be locked in battle for NT.  Ngata is perhaps most natural at the three-technique, as his short area quickness can really shine instead of forcing him to deal with two to three interior blockers on every play.

This is an especially important season for Ngata, who carries a cap number of $16 million both this season and next.  Next season, however, his dead money falls from $15 million all the way down to $8.5 million.  This will make his roster decision a crucial one in the scheme of next year’s cap.

If Ngata is feeling any stress about his job security, he certainly isn’t showing it on the beach.
