Tampa Bay Buccaneers hold elite tight end unit

If collecting tight ends were a hobby, one could be forgiven for being jealous of the group that Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Jeff Tedford has amassed.

Proclaiming the 2014 Bucs to hold the best tight ends in the league is a bit premature. Making an argument that Tampa Bay even has a top 10 player at the position would take some serious factual gymnastics. Numerically, the Bucs have much to be desired entering 2014.

Free agent pick-up Brandon Myers had a breakout 2012 season compiling 79 receptions with the New York Giants. Unfortunately, Myers was unable to duplicate the feat in 2013 with a much more disappointing 47 catches. However, Myers found the endzone four times in each season and averaged 10-11 yards a reception. His presence should provide quarterback Josh McCown a security blanket on third downs.

Tim Wright has reportedly impressed during mini-camp which shouldn’t be a great surprise. Standing at 6’4″ and 220, Wright is more of a glorified receiver than the traditional tight end. His athleticism is a resource that head coach Lovie Smith would definitely like to take advantage of.

Then there’s newcomer Austin Seferian-Jenkins. Watching a lot of Pac-12 football, there’s no doubt that Seferian-Jenkins has the potential to be a top five player at his position. Size? Check. Pass-catching ability? Check. Speed? Check.

Seferian-Jenkins was a high school basketball player (just like first round draft pick Mike Evans). The Washington product has the frame and overall strength that should give him the ability line up as a blocker as well.

Luke Stocker may be the odd man out in the final 53 man roster. Stocker is built more like a traditional tight end and hasn’t established himself as a go-to pass catcher.

If talent were only subject of conversation the Buccaneers have an impressive bunch. Today’s NFL has seen the tight end position evolve into almost as big a passing threat as the traditional receiver.

Tampa is embracing the new reality and ready to show off the goods this upcoming season.
