It’s Quotable Monday! Some have wondered what the relationship between the Carolina Panthers’ organization and wide receiver Steve Smith is like at this point. It was perceived to be somewhat fractured after Smith was unceremoniously shown the door this offseason and he eventually signed with the Baltimore Ravens. Smith was back in Charlotte recently to host his annual football camp and while there, he talked about that relationship.
“Just because you don’t have a job anymore with those people, that doesn’t mean the conversations stop,” said Smith. “(general manager) Dave (Gettleman) has been in that organization for a full year. He’s gotten to know me in that short term and I’ve gotten to know him. But there were people in (the Panthers) organization that when I got drafted, their kids were 7 or 8 years old, and now they’re in college. So there’s a lot longer time of relationship building that you don’t compare.”
It’s certainly nice to see that Smith and the Panthers are on good terms. While the way Smith left town wasn’t ideal, one has to figure that he and the organization will eventually patch things up. Hopefully we don’t reach a similar situation to what happened with Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packers.
