The Denver Broncos have to lock up the Thomas duo

More than two months before the 2014 NFL season begins, the Broncos are looking beyond this season and are in talks to re-sign wide receiver Demaryius Thomas and tight end Julius Thomas, who both reach free agency in 2015.

This is absolutely the right move for the Broncos.

Many people say that the Broncos 2013 offense was the best in history because of Manning. Although Manning was the key factor, that would not have been possible without his stellar supporting cast..

Manning could not have put up the numbers he did in 2013 without the other offensive players; it’s as simple as that. Because the Broncos might not have Manning for more than a few more seasons, the team needs to make sure it can still succeed without him. That success starts with both Demaryius Thomas and Julius Thomas.

Demaryius Thomas was the team’s first round pick in the 2010 draft, and he made an immediate impact. He played in 10 games in 2010 and recorded 22 receptions for 283 yards and two touchdowns.

He continued to improve in 2011, and in 2012, his breakout season, he was selected to his first Pro Bowl. He finished the season with 94 receptions for 1,434 yards and 10 touchdowns. He was the team’s leader in targets, receptions and yards.

In 2013, he was selected to the Pro Bowl for the second consecutive year and the Associated Press All-Pro team for the first time. He had 92 catches for 1,430 yards and 14 touchdowns. He was second in the NFL for number of touchdowns. Also for the second straight year, he was the team’s leader in targets, receptions and yards.

Demaryius Thomas was also one of the bright spots in Super Bowl XLIVIII; he recorded 13 receptions for 188 yards in the team’s 43-8 loss to the Seattle Seahawks — the most receptions in Super Bowl history.

The Broncos acquired Julius Thomas in the fourth round of the 2011 draft. Unlike Demaryius Thomas, he did not make immediate impact on the team and only had one catch during his first two seasons. In 2013, however, he became an essential part of the historic offense.

In 2013, he recorded 65 receptions for 788 yards. He ended the season with 12 touchdown receptions, the most touchdowns in a single season in franchise history, exceeding Shannon Sharpe’s 10 touchdown receptions. Thomas was selected to his first Pro Bowl in 2013.

It’s true that without Manning, the team’s offense will likely not be as historically epic as the current offense. However, Demaryius Thomas and Julius Thomas are part of the future of the Broncos and will be part of the successful transition when Manning retires.

The Broncos made headlines during this offseason by signing many high profile free agents. Due to these offseason moves, many are predicting the Broncos to be even better this season.

But the team can’t plan for just this season. It’s important to plan for the future, and signing Damaryius Thomas and Julius Thomas does just that and can ensure the success of the team not just for next season but also for seasons to come.
