While the bulk of the free agent frenzy that hits at the beginning of the offseason is over, there are still some nice players left on the market. Although this is the time of the season for endless amounts of hyperbolic praise, no team is perfect. While New England has done a commendable job of improving their squad and keeping up with Denver in the AFC arms race, they still have some holes throughout their roster. Some big-name players recently joined the free-agency pool, and the Patriots almost always do their due diligence when it comes to any player who could potentially make them better. Here’s a look at a few of these players:
Jason Babin, DE:
Babin was released from the Jaguars on Thursday morning, making him one of more high-profile defenders left on the open market. The 34-year-old is an intriguing talent. Remember when he recorded 18 sacks with the Eagles’ “Dream Team” back in 2011? While his best days are behind him, Babin certainly has talent, notching 7.5 sacks and 3 forced fumbles in 2013 and could serve as a complementary pass-rusher for a willing team. While Chandler Jones and Rob Ninkovich are entrenched as starters at defensive end, there aren’t many proven guys sitting behind them on the depth chart. Babin could join Will Smith as a veteran backup on the edge. Another plus, Babin probably wouldn’t command a steep price. The guy’s only been on the marketing for a few hours at the time of me writing this, but this hypothetical move has Bill Belichick written all over it.
