Brandin Cooks receives new nickname from New Orleans Saints teammates

OTA’s and Mini Camps are well-renowned for the high-jinks and practical jokes players use to mess with each other. Most (if not all) are all in good fun, including one joke Saints players used to take a minor dig at rookie wide receiver Brandin Cooks.

Cooks had yet to participate in off-season workouts with the Saints because of a NCAA rule that prevented him from being in New Orleans with the team. When he arrived at OTA’s, teammates had already determined a nickname for their new speedster.

Fresh Legs.

“They’ve been grinding for about three weeks and I come in the last couple of days,” Cooks told’s John DeShazier sheepishly Thursday.

However, just because Cooks hasn’t been with the team doesn’t mean he’s been slacking off.

“I’ve been extremely comfortable, due to the fact that I was able to go over plays with Coach Carter (Sheridan) in the mornings, three times a week, getting the playbook down” Cooks told DeShazier.

But nothing can replace the feel of OTA’s, and the influence a veteran can have on a rookie.

“The vets all helped me out throughout this time, so it’s all been good,” he remarked to DeShazier. “It was just fun to get with the offense and get it going against the defense, some of those veterans over there, and just get myself acclimated with the game of football at this level.”
