When cover32 released its list of the top 10 defensive ends in the NFL today, there were some people angry about their favorite team’s top pass rusher not making the list. It made for a bit of spirited debate in the “Comments” section below the article.
And it also begged another question: How close was Mr. Irate Fan’s DE to making the list?
To provide an answer, the editors at cover32 have decided to reveal the defensive ends who finished 11-20 during the ranking process.
Let the debate continue!
20. Osi Umenyiora
The Giants didn’t think the veteran pass rusher had much left in the tank, so they let him leave via free agency last year. In Atlanta, Umenyiora made the Falcons look smart for taking a chance on a 32-year-old defensive end. During his first season outside of the Big Apple, Umenyiora recorded 7.5 sacks and even hauled in an interception. He turns 33 in November, so the clock is definitely ticking on his career.
19. Julius Peppers
Peppers certainly isn’t the player he once was, but that’s not necessarily a huge indictment. After all, he’s an eight-time Pro Bowl selection, three-time All-NFL choice and a member of the All-2000s team; that’s a pretty high standard. Last year, he dipped below it, but still recorded 7.5 sacks. Given the decline, however, the Bears decided to part ways with Peppers, letting him defect to the Packers via free agency.
