I love…the idea of Jackie Battle at fullback

When the Tennessee Titans have had the personnel to do so, I’ve long clamored for a bigger running back to be shifted to fullback.

Even with LenDale White and Chris Johnson, I thought that a one-two punch in the backfield could be terrifying for opposing defenses.¬†If said running back that’s being shifted to fullback can block, you’re losing virtually nothing from lining up in this set.

So when Jim Wyatt from the Tennessean posted a snippet on Tuesday about the Titans moving Jackie Battle to fullback after the release of Quinn Johnson, thoughts of Bishop Sankey or Dexter McCluster at running back behind Battle left me salivating for real-game action.

“It is different, but I think in the offense you can play to a lot of guys strengths, there’s not one guy trying to do everything,” Battle said. “So I think it could be for the better.

“Versatility is going to be key in this offense, especially in the backfield. Our entire backfield is versatile, and that is the key to making the team and having a chance to help.”

Battle is quick, big and explosive. He can hit the gap, run through lineman and outrun linebackers. Having Battle in the backfield changes the outlook for opposing defenses. It’s an extra runner to worry about and misdirection plays can be huge for this team with the speed of McCluster and size of Sankey.

For me, this is a game-changer on the offense.
