Weekly Rewind: Cam Newton called into question; Kawann Short ready to emerge

It’s never a boring week in the NFL is it? Just when you think there’s nothing to talk about, ESPN publishes a story where 26 NFL insiders (head coaches, general managers, coordinators, even a top executive) evaluated every starting quarterback in the NFL.

To the chagrin of Carolina Panthers fans, the insiders agreed that Cam Newton is merely an average NFL quarterback. Their main reasoning was that Cam simply isn’t consistent enough at this point, which is a very fair criticism.

Of course, maybe Newton would be much better if he had a better receiving corps. Did the Panthers make a mistake by not drafting Keenan Allen instead of Kawann Short, when they’d already taken another defensive tackle in the first round? Considering how Short is poised to break out in 2014, maybe it wasn’t a bad decision.
