Camp Preview: Do the New England Patriots have Tom Brady’s successor?

I know everyone loves Tom Brady, but that doesn’t mean this isn’t going to be a heated competition for the starting job…

Yeah, just kidding.

Brady may be “old,” but he’s still a beast. As I wrote about last week, the only thing that has changed about Brady is his perception. He’s going to be great, and there’s no reason why he shouldn’t be able to lead the Pats back to the AFC Championship Game.

That said, the quarterback position should actually be one of the more interesting to watch this training camp.

Somehow, after dropping in the draft due to off-the-field issues and doing absolutely nothing—thanks to Brady—to prove his on-the-field talent in the NFL, Ryan Mallett has managed to wriggle himself into nearly every trade rumor surrounding the Patriots.

Could he be a great player? Yeah, I guess. But it’s not going to be in New England. If he doesn’t get traded before the season, my guess is that he will be sooner than later, hopefully to the Texans for Andre Johnson.

Jimmy Garoppolo, on the other hand, is here for the long term. It’s apparent that he’ll be the eventual successor to Brady, or at least that’s the plan. The Eastern Illinois grad is still rough around the edges, but luckily, he has plenty of time to figure it out.

There’s no need to watch Brady, we all know what we’re getting, but make sure to keep an eye on the development of both Mallet and Garoppolo.
