As training camp approaches, it means the Tennessee Titans move one day closer to the preseason, and eventually the regular season. As we inch further throughout the offseason, every day we will feature a training camp preview.

Today’s preview focuses on a changing of the guard, as three defensive backs attempt to replace Alterraun Verner opposite Jason McCourty.

Starters: FS Michael Griffin, SS Bernard Pollard

Out of all the defensive positions, these are the two sturdiest. Griffin is a lifelong Titans who showed no signs of slowing down in his seventh season as a pro.

In Pollard’s first year with Tennessee, he became the talking head of the defense and a leader on the field. He brought a physical mentality the Titans defense was lacking and simply demanded excellence from the team.

Backups: Daimion Stafford, George Wilson

Wilson was a solid contributor to a stout group of safeties. He can play as a third safety or as a nickel cornerback. He’ll provide veteran leadership this season as well.

Stafford enters his second season and will provide depth, with the occasional nod to special-teams play.

Check back Friday for a preview of the special teams unit.
