The first day of Tennessee Titans training camp came and passed with a few tidbits passed along by John Glennon of the Tennessean:
“Corner battle begins: Coty Sensabaugh got the first opportunity to start at the outside cornerback spot, in Alterraun Verner’s old position. Blidi Wreh-Wilson will likely get the opportunity tomorrow, as the two go back and forth in the competition. Sensabaugh was beaten twice in a row during one seven-on-seven drill, as Kendall Wright and Justin Hunter both made nice catches.”
Reaction: Sensabaugh is entering his third season in the league, one longer than Wreh-Wilson. While Tommie Campbell surely would love to get in on the competition, everything we’ve heard makes it seem like this is a two-player race for the starting spot opposite Jason McCourty.
Both will attempt to outshine each other as the days to the regular season draw closer.
“Pollard says hello: Safety Bernard Pollard is generally known more for his hitting than his hands, but he picked off quarterback Jake Locker twice – once during a one-one drill and once during a team drill, when Locker sailed a pass intended for Delanie Walker.”
Reaction: There were a few comments about how fresh and healthy Jake Locker looked coming into the offseason. Has his ceiling fallen thanks to numerous injuries/offensive coordinators. It’s only Day 1 of training camp, so let’s not jump the gun. But it’s absolutely something to keep in mind.
UPDATE: Paul Kuharsky notes those were the only two bad plays for an otherwise successful first day of camp.
“Good start for Mariani: Wide receiver Marc Mariani, who’s missed the last two seasons with injuries, got off to a good start. He beat Tommie Campbell deep on one play, hauling in a perfectly placed Charlie Whitehurst pass in stride.”
Reaction: Mariani will need a strong camp to make the roster. So far, so good.
