Camp Summary: Jairus Byrd takes flight, Brandin Cooks makes his mark

Tuesday saw the beginning of a new era in the Saints defensive backfield, with record-breaking signee Jairus Byrd taking the field for the first time this year with Kenny Vaccaro.

Byrd was recovering from minor back surgery up until this point, and he was greeted by raucous applause when he made his first appearance at camp. Assuming both can stay healthy, this unit is likely to be seen as the best pair of safeties in the NFL. Despite the surgery Byrd looked physically fine, taking reps on the first team defense and even returning a few punts.

And for what it’s worth, Robert Meachem made his first appearance at camp as well.

We also got our first glimpse of rookie wide receiver Brandin Cooks’ potential impact on the Saints’ offense.

Another offensive playmaker had a good showing on Tuesday, that being oft-maligned wide receiver Nick Toon. By many accounts Toon hasn’t lived up to expectations thus far in his career, but this offseason he’s begun to turn some heads. The coaching staff is beginning to see him as a potential impact player come the fall, and the local media is taking notice.
