Patrick Peterson signs huge contract extension

Arizona Cardinals cornerback Patrick Peterson has reached an agreement with the team on a five-year $70.05 million contract extension with $47.3 million dollars guaranteed. The amount is fully guaranteed for injury and is the highest guarantee for a cornerback in the history of the NFL.

According to, Peterson will get a $15.3 million signing bonus and will be locked up until he becomes an unrestricted free agent in 2021. The specifics of the year-by-year salary cap numbers for the deal are not yet available. His deal is on par with the one signed by Cleveland cornerback Joe Haden ($67.5 million over 5 seasons) and Seattle cornerback Richard Sherman ($56 million over four years with $40 million in guaranteed money).

Peterson also announced the deal on his Twitter feed.

His teammates were supportive of the deal saying it was well-deserved and how he deserves every penny of it. Defensive lineman Calais Campbell had the best reaction.

As of press time, Sherman hasn’t tweeted a reaction of his own to the deal.

Peterson will have a press conference later this morning to discuss the deal and presumably trade a couple jabs with Sherman. Tony Jefferson had a tweet of his own via Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic.
