Dennis Allen says Raiders could add another tight end to the roster

In probably the least surprising news of the preseason, Oakland Raiders head coach Dennis Allen noted that the team could be looking to add another tight end to the roster. After the Raiders saw both David Ausberry and Nick Kasa go down with knee injuries in the past couple of weeks, the team is in desperate need of help at the tight end position.

The Raiders still have Mychal Rivera who showed a lot in his rookie season and has been on fire ever since reporting to camp this offseason. But behind him, the Raiders are scarily thin. They currently have Brian Leonhardt sharing first team reps with Rivera. Leonhardt spent last season on the practice squad and looked to be on the bubble to make the roster before the injuries to Kasa and Ausberry. Behind him are two undrafted rookie free agents in Jake Murphy and Scott Simonson. Murphy looks like he has NFL potential but he is still raw and not the ideal candidate to get a bunch of playing time.

A this point, the Raiders need to look at adding more than just another body to fill out the roster during camp and preseason. With both Kasa and Ausberry out indefinitely, the team needs to start looking for a guy who is ready to take important snaps during the season. Preferably a veteran who can add stability to a group whose most experienced player is a second year player who was not a full time starter as a rookie.
